What a way to end the 2006-2007 ski season! New England (and most of the east coast, from Georgia to Maine) was hit by a potent snowstorm before Easter weekend. Okemo received over a foot of new snow, and the result was mid-winter ski conditions, with soft snow, some powder, a lot of excellent coverage and many open runs. Also, given that it’s so late in the season, not many people were there to crowd the hills.
Okemo is an interesting mountain. Not particularly challenging, it does offer impeccable, fall-line runs with great snow cover and a top-notch lift system. However, getting from one side of the mountain to the other is far from intuitive – which was great for me, as my favorite part of the mountain stayed mostly empty all day. My new Blizzards were perfect for the day (they’ll need to be tuned, as I found a few little rocks toward the end of the day), and the weather allowed for some great picture taking.
This is likely my last trip to the slopes for this season. If it is, it’s a very high note on which to end.
