American skier Lindsey Kildow won a FIS World Cup downhill race in Val d’Isere, France, this past weekend. As winner, she received a trophy, cash, and a Tarine cow. The Tarine’s milk is used to make Beaufort cheese.

This is the usual prize for the winner of this race, and the usual custom is for the winner to sell the cow back to the farmers who donated it. However, Lindsey returned the $1,000 check to the farmers and told them she’d be keeping the cow. She spoke with local farmers in France who will tend to the cow until space can be secured close to Lindsey’s winter home in Austria.
