Being injured has made a lot of things quite clear:
- I never realized how much I use my left hand. Granted, I am left-handed, but it’s still a shock how often I instinctively try to use said hand.
- The human body is a delicate kinetic sculpture. Yes, the body is tough – when joints are used in their proper application. But add a variable to the mix (e.g. a bike crash or a backwards fall while skiing) and the fragility of things becomes apparent. It’s a wonder that most people don’t crumple into heaps.
- T-shirts assume healthy shoulders. The one I was wearing had to be cut off in order to keep my shoulder stable. For the next while, button-down shirts are a necessity.
- The hold music at Georgetown Hospital is more annoying than the crap on the Georgetown University phone system. At least the university’s system doesn’t have an annoying sales pitch voice-over.
- sprite is a very tolerant person to put up with me. I admit that I’m a true nuisance when I get injured around close friends and relatives, so it’s a tribute to her that she hasn’t slugged me for some of my yowls and swear fests.
This injury will be interesting to chronicle – stay tuned!

I’m not actually tolerant at all. No bedside manner. Or, rather, my bedside manner is designed to get people up out of their beds as quickly as possible.
