In a new Time interview, CIA chief Porter Goss claims that he has “an excellent idea” where Osama bin Laden is hiding. However, he says that the U.S. can’t simply act on this knowledge due to the sovereignty of other nations:
“But when you go to the very difficult question of dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you’re dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play. We have to find a way to work in a conventional world in unconventional ways that are acceptable to the international community.” – Porter Goss in “Time”, 27 June 2005 issue
Funny thing: we didn’t care about the sovereignty of Afghanistan when we waltzed right in and ousted the Taliban government (a move with which, by the way, I don’t really have a problem – we were actually going after Osama at the time, and the Taliban was harboring him and al-Qaeda). We also didn’t care about the sovereignty of Iraq when we marched in and overthrew their government on completely false pretenses.
So the question remains: who is the biggest liar in the White House’s food chain: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, Goss, Wolfowitz? This continuing cycle of double-speak and hollow words is getting tiring, and it looks like the U.S. populace is starting to notice.
